Forget Perfect. I’m Practicing- Skills, Self-Worth, And The Power Of Showing Up

“I’m not good at anything”

It’s a quiet thought many young people carry. Sometimes it hides behind humor. Sometimes behind silence. But often, it reflects something deeper- a fragile sense of self-worth, and a longing to feel capable, seen and valued. In a world that often defines success through scores, ranks, or popularity, young people can begin to doubt themselves.

“What do I bring to the table? What makes me different? Who am I when no one’s watching?”

This is where skills come in- not just technical or academic, but emotional, social, and practical skills that empower youth far beyond a classroom or workplace.

Skills build more than careers- They build Identity!

World Youth Skills Day isn’t only about job readiness. It’s about helping youth discover the strengths they already carry which is resilience, empathy, adaptability, creativity. When a young person learns to manage their emotions, solve problems, or communicate effectively, something powerful happens when they begin to trust themselves.

Let’s Celebrate Growth, Not just Success!

Not all growth comes with certificates or medals. Sometimes, it looks like the quiet student who finally raises their hand. The anxious teen who reached out to a friend. The creative mind who designs something small but meaningful. These aren’t just actions. They’re identity building moments. Every time a skill is practiced, a voice is discovered. And with each voice, a stronger self begins to emerge.

To Every Young Person Reading this:

You are not behind.

You are not broken.

You are learning. And that’s enough.

Every time you try something new, ask for help, or keep going despite doubt, you are building a self that can weather any storm. And that more than a medal or certificate, is your true strength.

So this is World Youth Skills Day, let us celebrate not just what you do. Let us celebrate who you are becoming.
