The Power of Blessings: Honoring Elders and Building Meaningful Connections
Blessings are one of the most beautiful examples of equality. At first, it may seem that when an elder blesses a younger person, one person is giving while the other is receiving. But in reality, both are receiving something meaningful. The younger person receives goodwill, encouragement, love and a sense of being protected, while the elder receives respect, affection, attention and the joy of knowing that their presence and experience are valued.
There is something powerful about physically bowing before someone we respect. For a brief moment, we put aside our pride, worries, achievements and ego. We acknowledge that we have something to learn from those who came before us.Besides, the physical act of bending forward can also influence our physiological state. Changes in posture and breathing can affect circulation, muscle tension, and the way we experience stress. When combined with a calm environment, respectful intention, and affectionate human contact, the experience can become deeply soothing.
A blessing is rarely just a collection of words. When it comes from someone who genuinely loves and cares for us, it carries their hopes, affection, experience, and goodwill. Sometimes a few words such as “Be happy,” “May you succeed,” or “God bless you” can stay with us for years.
There is another side to this tradition that is often overlooked. As people grow older, their needs change. The people who once spent their lives caring for children, building families, working, sacrificing and making decisions for others may eventually find themselves needing more attention and companionship. Imagine an elderly parent or grandparent whose face lights up when a younger person bends down to receive their blessing. For that moment, they are not simply “old.” They are respected. Their presence matters. Their life experience matters. Their goodwill matters.
In a world where conversations increasingly happen through screens, physical gestures of affection and respect can become even more meaningful. Sitting beside an elder, holding their hand, touching their feet, listening to their stories, or simply asking for their blessings can create a connection that technology cannot replicate and perhaps that is the real magic!
An elder may know what it means to endure difficult times. They may have experienced failure, loss, responsibility, relationships, sacrifice, and resilience in ways that cannot be learned from a screen. Seeking their blessings is therefore also a way of acknowledging the journey that came before ours.
It says, in a simple gesture, “I respect what you have experienced. I value your good wishes. I am grateful that you are part of my life.” The blessing does not necessarily change our circumstances. It changes how we feel as we face those circumstances. When we bow with humility, we rise with blessings.
So, the next time you meet an elder, take a moment to offer your respect and seek their wholehearted Blessings. That simple gesture may create far more positivity—for both of you—than you ever imagined.
