The 80s Are Back. But What Are We Leaving Behind?
The trend works because it taps into something deeply psychological: nostalgia. Nostalgia is emotionally comforting. It can make us feel connected to a simpler, more familiar version of life, even if we never actually lived through that period ourselves. When thousands of people begin posting their AI-generated 80s versions, another psychological force enters the picture - social proof. We see everyone participating, so participation starts to feel normal. And when something feels normal, we rarely stop to question its consequences.
There is also the psychology of the fear of missing out, or FOMO. Instagram is designed around visibility and participation. When your friends, favourite creators and celebrities are suddenly posting their retro avatars, sitting out can feel like being left behind. One image becomes two, two become ten, and soon we are asking AI to recreate ourselves in different outfits, locations and aesthetics simply because the first version “wasn’t quite right.” The problem isn’t one person generating one image. It is the collective scale of millions of people doing the same thing repeatedly.
And behind that seemingly effortless image is a physical infrastructure we rarely think about. AI image generation requires powerful computers in data centres, which consume electricity and generate significant heat. Cooling those systems can require substantial amounts of water. Research has increasingly highlighted that AI’s environmental footprint involves not just energy and carbon emissions, but also water, land and the resources required to manufacture the hardware itself.
This is where psychology becomes particularly important. The environmental cost of digital actions is psychologically distant. If we throw away a plastic bottle, we can physically see it sitting in a bin. If we leave a tap running, we can hear the water. But when we type a prompt into an AI tool, there is no visible smoke, no overflowing drain and no warning saying, “This request required electricity and cooling resources.” The environmental consequence happens somewhere else, inside a data centre we will probably never see. That distance makes it easier for our brains to underestimate the impact.
None of this means that generating an 80s picture makes someone environmentally irresponsible. One image alone is not going to destroy the planet. The larger issue is scale and repetition. Current reporting on the viral trend has highlighted that millions of users generating, regenerating and sharing AI images can turn individually tiny footprints into a much larger collective demand.
Perhaps the answer isn’t to stop having fun with technology. It is to become more intentional about it. Do we really need ten versions of the same AI photograph? Do we need to regenerate an image simply because the hairstyle wasn’t perfect? Can we enjoy a trend without automatically participating in every version of it?
The irony is that we are using incredibly advanced technology to recreate an era that existed long before our current obsession with instant digital gratification. Maybe the most meaningful way to appreciate the past is not to endlessly recreate its aesthetic, but to learn something from it, including the value of slowing down.
Because sometimes, the most sustainable trend is simply knowing when not to press “generate” again.
