Neuroimaging techniques allow researchers to study the brain in living people. They help us understand how brain structure and activity are linked to behaviour and mental processes. These methods are important in neuropsychology because they provide visible evidence of what is happening inside the brain.
CT Scan (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the brain. It is often used in hospitals to quickly detect brain injuries, bleeding, or tumors. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the brain’s structure. It is widely used because it gives clear images of soft tissues without using radiation. EEG (Electroencephalography) records the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. It is useful for studying brain waves and diagnosing conditions like epilepsy and sleep disorders.
These are just some of the most common techniques used. Other techniques include PET scans, EEG, and other types of MRI scans. Using neuroimaging techniques supports other research methods like observation and cognitive testing by helping researchers directly see how the brain is working internally.
