From Cool City to Constant Heat: How Bengaluru’s Weather Is Quietly Draining Us

Bengaluru was once that effortlessly cool friend we all bragged about. “Oh, you’re melting in Chennai? Aiyo paavam. Here, I need a hoodie at night.” That was the vibe. The city had a personality, pleasant, breezy, slightly unpredictable, but mostly kind. But now? Somewhere along the way, Bengaluru decided to go through a personality crisis and turned into that friend who shows up uninvited, sweaty, loud, and a little too intense.

Let’s be honest, this heat is not what we signed up for. We came here for “AC weather without AC bills,” not this slow roasting experience. You wake up already tired, not because you didn’t sleep well, but because your fan spent the entire night doing “bare minimum work.” And somewhere between turning your pillow to the “cool side” for the 47th time and contemplating life choices at 3 AM, you mumble, “Eriyuthu di Maala, fan ah 12 la vai…” like it’s a genuine survival strategy.

There’s something uniquely exhausting about heat that isn’t dramatic enough to complain about loudly, but persistent enough to quietly drain you. Psychologically, it chips away at your patience. You’re irritable for no clear reason. Small inconveniences feel personal. Someone walks too slowly in front of you? Annoying. Your WiFi buffers? Rage. Your brain is basically running on low battery mode, and even basic functioning feels like a task. Or as Vadivelu would perfectly put it, “Idhu eppadi irukku?”, a question we’re all asking, but no one has answers to.

And productivity? Gone. Absolutely gone. You sit down to work, full of intention, but your brain is like, “Let’s not.” Heat affects cognitive performance like your focus dips, decision-making slows down, and suddenly even replying to a simple email feels like writing a UPSC exam. You keep telling yourself, “Just one small task,” but end up doom-scrolling instead, because apparently that requires less energy than thinking.

What makes it worse is the emotional toll. Bengaluru used to feel like a safe space, a city that didn’t overwhelm you. But now, the constant heat adds this invisible layer of discomfort. You feel restless, slightly off, and weirdly unmotivated. It’s not burnout exactly, but it’s not not burnout either. It’s like your mind is saying, “Bro, I’m tired,” and your body is just nodding along in silent agreement.

And don’t even get started on stepping outside. The sun hits you like it has a personal vendetta. Autos feel like moving ovens, buses are… well, let’s not even go there. You walk five minutes and question your entire existence. Somewhere in your head, Vadivelu’s voice echoes, “Ivan solrathaiyum seiyrathu illa, seiyrathaiyum solrathu illa…”, because honestly, weather apps are just lying to us at this point.

But here’s the thing, we’re all collectively experiencing this. Every “It’s so hot today, no?” is not small talk anymore; it’s a bonding moment. We’re all just trying to function, hydrating aggressively, dressing like it’s Goa, and pretending this is fine. Because what else can we do?

Maybe the answer isn’t in controlling the weather, but in acknowledging how it’s affecting us. Taking slower days, being a little kinder to ourselves, not expecting peak productivity when our brains are basically melting. And yes, dramatically increasing the fan speed like it’s going to fix everything.

Because at this point, Bengaluru isn’t just testing our patience, it’s testing our personality. And all we can do is laugh, sweat, and survive… one sarcastic complaint at a time.
